The future
Whitman said these words, “He most honors my style who learns under it to destroy the teacher.” I think what Whitman is saying is seek a better way of learning by thinking for yourself instead of being consumed by grades and test scores. Maybe 150 years ago it wasn’t the ACT or the SAT but its was the traditional style of teaching and learning that was flawed. People should be more than what a GPA reflects, more than what a 3 hour test that produces a 1-36 score shows what I know. Mr. Depung taught me some of these values by teaching me to learn for myself.
As seniors in high school having one or two classes that involve any work it can be easy to coast through like a mindless corpse. Fortunately Mr.Depung had a different plan for us, as an educator he’s opened our eyes to what education is really about. That its about becoming a thinker and understanding material not just memorizing it. He’s shown us that we’re more than a statistic. He’s helped me to understand that after college no one’s going to be teaching me everything I need to know, that im going to have to find ways to learn on my own.
In closing I feel honored to be a student of a teacher who believes in so much more than grades. I’m a student of a teacher who believes in learning at its best. I’m a student of a teacher who has changed my life by showing me a path that will help me find my own. I’m Houston Rieger and thanks to Mr. Mike Depung I am more than a test score I’m the future.
